Boldly Grown Farm

#GSVMemberMonday Feature

Boldly Grown Farm is a certified organic family farm in Bow, Washington that specializes in fall and winter produce. Farm owners Amy Frye and Jacob Slosberg offer a winter Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in addition to a fully-stocked year-round farm stand where they feature their own produce, pasture-raised eggs, plus a range of other local and specialty items. Their produce is available wholesale from various distributors (including the Puget Sound Food Hub), making its way throughout Washington, Oregon, California and beyond.

Boldly Grown Farm’s CSA share consists of 10 bi-weekly boxes, each containing approximately 8-10 different items. Boxes include a core rotating cast of winter vegetables (carrots, beets, winter squash, potatoes, onions, shallots, garlic, cabbage, etc.) plus freshly harvested items (kale, collards, Swiss Chard, broccoli, cauliflower, radicchio, purple sprouting broccoli, etc.). Value-added products like sauerkraut, pickled peppers, dried peppers and chili flakes brighten up the winter months. Boldly Grown Farm offers pre-packed CSA boxes to multiple drop sites in Seattle, Skagit Valley and Bellingham locations.

This year, the farm offers two winter CSA add-on subscriptions – a bread share add-on subscription as well as a cheese share add-on. The winter CSA bread share features fresh bread baked at nearby Water Tank Bakery. The winter CSA cheese share add-on will include a different cheese with each CSA delivery for a total of ten, sourced from producers like Samish Bay CheeseTwin Sisters Creamery, and Ferndale Farmstead.

Amy says that their Winter CSA program is a unique opportunity to receive a regular supply of local food during the traditional off-season. “It’s a great option to try radicchio and the rest of our fall/winter crops.”

Radicchio? Yes! Regional leaders in radicchio production, Boldly Grown Farm grows numerous varieties.

We recently asked Amy what her favorite #SkagitGrown crop was and here’s what she had to say:

“Is it too cliche to say radicchio? Which we grow a lot of! It’s a crop that grows well in our climate, allows us to eat local salads all winter, and is incredibly versatile. I know it’s an acquired taste for some people, but I do wish people would give it a fair shake and try it in a few different preparations before writing it off as too bitter. I think there are certain flavor combinations where it can really shine! We only grow radicchio in the fall & winter, and I’m waiting for my first radicchio salad this autumn.”

The farmstand at Boldly Grown Farm is open from 9 a.m. to dusk daily. More information on this year’s Winter CSA sign-up can be found HERE. Thank you for feeding us so much Skagit grown goodness while supporting the Genuine Skagit Valley program, Boldly Grown Farm!
