Genuine Skagit Valley Reinforces Local Brand Equity with Federal Certification Mark Renewal
BURLINGTON, WA – The Northwest Agriculture Business Center and the Genuine Skagit Valley program are pleased to announce the successful renewal and ongoing protection of the “Genuine Skagit Valley” federal Certification Mark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Initially granted in 2021, the brand protects and celebrates the origin of the region’s robust agricultural output; the renewal ensures that local producers and agricultural service providers retain exclusive, federally backed rights to showcase the unique terroir of Skagit Valley.
“The renewal of our federal Certification Mark is a major milestone for our entire agricultural community,” said GSV Director, Blake Van Roekel. “This Mark isn’t just a label – it’s a stamp of origin and excellence. It protects the integrity of our local farmers, boosts our global recognition, and assures consumers that they are supporting authentic, world-class products grown right here in Skagit Valley.”
Since the Genuine Skagit Valley brand development in 2021, hundreds of thousands of consumers have experienced the brand through the hundreds of agricultural product and service providers in the Skagit Valley. Furthermore, events, including the Skagit Farm to Pint and Tidewater Boil festivals, Farmstand Fresh and dozens of other promotions have expanded the awareness of the farms and foods of the Skagit Valley.
The Skagit Valley is an agricultural powerhouse, producing more than 90 different crops. The region supplies 95% of U.S. table beet seed, 75% of U.S. spinach seed, and 95% of Washington state’s red potatoes, alongside millions of iconic cut flowers and bulbs. With the renewal complete, local agricultural producers and organizations are encouraged to submit or update their annual membership applications to maintain compliance and utilize the Mark on their packaging, signs, websites, and point-of-sale materials. Current membership eligibility requires an annual renewal and an affidavit confirming that the defining ingredients or services are predominately sourced within the valley.
