The Crows Farm

#GSVMemberMonday Feature

The Crows Farm was established in 2015 by Matthew and Giana Cioni and their farm is located in Bow, Washington. Matthew, Giana, and their hard working farm crew grow a wide variety of certified organic herbs, veggies and flowers for farm-to-school programs, consumers, and wholesale buyers in Skagit and Whatcom counties.

The Crows Farm is certified organic by Oregon Tilth. Their organic practices prioritize growing techniques that will enhance and protect the sensitive land they farm on. For example, they specialize in various culinary herbs in the Spring, Summer and Fall months which naturally attract pollinators throughout the growing season.  They plant cover crops such as buckwheat, winter rye, and vetch, when fields are not in production to help prevent erosion and build soil health, while sequestering carbon dioxide.

One vegetable that Matthew and Giana have become especially well-known for growing is Radicchio. Radicchio is a leafy chicory that’s often used to add color to salads. In Skagit County, we have the perfect climate suitable for growing Radicchio, and through the years Matthew and Giana have become fond of the plants for their quirkiness and finickiness. In 2022 they participated in the Sagra del Radicchio along with other fellow Skagit Valley growers Boldly Grown Farm and Ralph’s Greenhouse as well as other family owned farms thoroughout the Pacific Northwest.

In 2022 Matthew and Giana welcomed a daughter named Emilia. We have enjoyed seeing Emilia’s personality emerge as she has grown on the farm through the farm’s Instagram page.

We recently asked Giana what her family’s favorite Skagit Valley fruit and/or vegetable was and here’s what she said:

“Our favorite Skagit grown vegetable is fennel! We grow lots of fennel and we love the versatility of fennel. You can eat it raw in salads, carmelized in sauces, braised in wedges, the fronds provide a beautiful and delicious garnish, and the stems, fronds and scraps make for a flavorful broth! “

We’re so delighted to feature this sweet family that is so loved here in the Skagit Valley. Thank you for feeding us, The Crows Farm and for being an important part of the Genuine Skagit Valley program on this #GSVMemberMonday!
