Crowell Photography: #GSVMemberMonday Feature

With a pair of binoculars in one hand and a Nikon camera in another, local photographer, writer, conservationist, and Genuine Skagit Valley Member Nancy Crowell of Crowell Photography observes, writes, educates, captures, and shares the best of the #MagicSkagit for all of us to enjoy.

Nancy’s nationally recognized and award-winning photography incorporates flora, fauna and landscapes in a unique and magical way, all while telling a thoughtful story about this place we call home. We recently asked Nancy, ‘What is your favorite #SkagitValley fruit and/or vegetable – and why?’ and here’s what she had to say:

“It should come as no surprise that my favorite crop in the valley is blueberries! Not only do I love to eat blueberries, but as a photographer I am enamored of the very photogenic bushes with their red leaves and red stems through the fall and winter. The red adds a pop of color that can set off a gaggle of geese or flock of swans flying over. There weren’t large blueberry crops around when I first moved here, but I’m glad there are now.”

“My other favorite crop is leeks – for pretty much the same reason. I think they’re beautiful, both in the field and when you cut them open to clean them. I never had leeks where I grew up, so they were new to me when I moved up here. Now I can’t imagine not having them. The muted blue green tones of the leaves is a color I love seeing in the fields and potato leek soup made from local leeks and potatoes is one of my favorite winter comfort foods.”

This past autumn Nancy was a featured artist at the 37th Annual Art’s Alive show in downtown La Conner. Her next local exhibit will be at River Gallery in Mount Vernon from April 1 -30 2023. Nancy’s unique prints and photography services are available for purchase on her website directly. You can also purchase notecards featuring some of her stunning Skagit Valley tulip prints in our online GSV store.
